MEMBERS VISIT TO RIPON WORKHOUSE MUSEUM
We enjoyed an excellent visit on 20 June with an expert guide and preceded by delicious Workhouse kitchen-made scones and jam.
Members making a return visit were impressed by all the changes and progress made in the more recently acquired building.
The weather cleared enough for us to take in a good view of the very productive kitchen garden and we were greatly impressed by the work of all the volunteers involved in the project.
SCULPTING THE QUEEN
Many visitors attended our May meeting when Richard Bossons gave a fascinating presentation, describing the processes involved in designing and sculpting the new statue of the late Queen at York Minster.
Richard has a thorough photographic record from original sketches to the fixing of the statue on the west front of the Minster. We all learnt a lot and Richard’s engaging manner is now making him a sought-after speaker at other groups. But we were there first!

WAYWARD WYNYARD
In April, Ronnie Tempest gave us a very entertaining talk about the Wynyard Estate and the history of his family - tales of turbulent Tempests, volatile Vanes and stormy Stewarts.
They were involved in many of the major conflicts across the United Kingdom - usually on the losing side - and managed to get themselves out of trouble by the heir to the estate marrying a wealthy wife. It was a rollercoaster ride through the centuries!

RAISE THE ROOF
Dan Sudron, an archivist from the County Records Office, was our speaker in March. He gave a fantastic presentation outlining the resources we can find to help us research house history. Do follow the link to a very useful blog.

Our secretary Tony Keates presents a cheque and a copy of our publication ‘Coverdale WWI Veterans Remembered’ to the treasurer of Coverdale Memorial Hall.
Committee member Marjorie Iveson with a sample of images from her ‘History of Leyburn’. We very much enjoyed Marjorie’s talk at our January meeting and having the opportunity to study the wonderful photographs. The ‘History of Leyburn’ can be found in Leyburn library.
Our publication ‘Coverdale WWI Veterans Remembered’ is available from Val Slater at any meeting or [email protected]; The Wonky Tree bookshop in Leyburn; North Yorkshire County Records Office on Malpas Road, Northallerton. £15. See gallery page.
